Tricks Of The Trade



Here's a tip that I have found helpful for students that have difficulty in maintaining correct hand position: Take a sturdy (1/4" wide) rubber band and loop it through each of the "D" rings on the pommel. The student can then slip their hands through the open end of the rubber band. If necessary, two or three bands can be strung together to accomodate the size or age of the student. This causes no discomfort to the student, and they would break very easily in case the rider got in trouble. Students quickly learn to keep their hands still because the tension on the rubber bands quickly reminds them where their hands should be.

I installed a row of hooks on the outside of my arena near the gate. I used bent horseshoes but any kind of hooks that are rounded will do. Now I can hang up my longe line, any extra tack, my jacket, a helmet, .....all the stuff I used to set on the ground outside the arena.






I brush the dirt/mud/shavings off blankets with a stiff brush while they are still on the horse. It's a lot easier than trying to do it after they are removed. Just go slow at first because of the sound, but surprisingly the horses don't seem to mind.

Ration: generally refers to the entire amount of feed available to the horse, including roughage, concentrates and supplements.

Roughage: the indigestible fiber in the horse's ration needed to give bulk and to keep the digestive system functioning properly; available in the form of pasture or forage, hay, processed hay (cubes or pellets) and other novelty roughage. The amount of nutrient in the roughage can vary greatly depending on the type and source.

Concentrates: feeds that are low in fiber and high in total digestible nutrients; examples includes the grains that horses eat, corn, oats and barley, as well as processed and formulated pelleted feeds.

Supplements: addition to a ration in order to increase specific nutrients and provide more vitamins, mineral or protein.
